UNO

First two weeks of classes (8/20/12)

As I promised the last time here are my first impressions of the classes at UNO.

On Aug 20th the funny days were over so to say. The curses started and if you haven’t seen that you would have no idea of what classes at a university are like in the US. I felt like I was back in the 10th grade of high school. The nice thing about it: with only 25 to 40 people in one class it is really silent and you can focus on the important stuff. The bad thing: everyone focuses on the important stuff, not only the teachers. No more chance for texting, talking or mailing within the lessons. Participation is important, a lot of talking on the subjects necessary. And for making it even worse: to be able to talk about the class topics I have to read so many articles and chapters in the books (which actually were about 50-70 $ each, but just because I was able to buy used ones or find book rentals; new ones would have cost me about $180 each!).

For those of you who know me: I hate reading! For those of you who are thinking “what are you complaining about, it is collage, you are supposed to read and work a lot”: shut up! :D

Ok, ok…I will stop complaining about it. To be honest: the classes are really interesting. The teachers are taking care a lot about their students and I lean some very good things here. I think I will perhaps rewrite this article after I got the results of my first exams, but for now it is really good ;-)
Orientation week (08/15 - 16/12/12)

During these first official days at UNO at got to know a lot of new people. There were about 100 international students from so many different countries. We heard several announcements about how to use the UNO systems and what things are left to do for immigration and class enrollment.

Second big topic was about health and safety. All of the students had to pass a TB test and prove at least 2 MMR shots. Unfortunately I forgot my Vaccination Certificate. But thanks to Anton I was able to show all my records and everything worked out.

On the last day of orientation we went to the zoo for free. But that’s another story to tell…
